Lacoste T-Shirts can trace their origins directly back to the original tennis whites worn by players in the nineteeth century. Usually worn with sleeves rolled up, the traditional tennis shirt was long sleeved with buttoned-up front and were considered unformal in their day.

French tennis champion René Lacoste felt that the long sleeved tennis whites of the day limited players movment and were uncomfortable. He believed he could improve on the current design and began developing a white short sleeved shirt made from loosely knit cotton. His design also featured a flat collar and longer tail in the back.

While playing the 1926 U.S. Open Tennis Championships Lacoste wore his new innovative design shirt, drawing more than a few stares and comments, both positive and negative. The famous crocodile was added to the top of the shirt left upper in 1927 which was in repsonse to the US press, who had nicknamed him 'the alligator'.

Logo de Chemise Lacoste was founded in the early 1930's to sell and produce his new shirt design. When Lacoste retired from tennis he focused on the merchandising and distribution of the shirts. The Lacoste T-Shirt not only appealed to tennis players, but many other players of other sports too. Soon the Lacoste T-Shirt could be seen not only on the tennis court but also on the golf course, polo field and many other sporting arenas.

Today, the Lacoste T-Shirt has become a wardrobe staple for men, and is as likely to be seen in a nightclub or bar as on the field of play. In the world of tennis, the Lacoste T-Shirt has now been replaced by non collared t-shirts, although the Lacoste T-Shirt is still a big favourite with the public.
